DO YOU OWN A RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND?

If you own a residential property in the Republic of Ireland you may be liable for the new €100 Household Charge that has been introduced from 2012 on foot of the EU/IMF agreement. This is an interim charge pending the future introduction of a more comprehensive and equitable valuationbased property tax. The Republic of Ireland is one of the last countries in Europe to introduce local property-based charges to fund local services. In addition, owners of private rented accommodation, holiday homes and other non-principal private residences in the Republic of Ireland may be liable to the €200 charge on non-principal private residences which was introduced in 2009 - see www.nppr.ie for more details

Who is liable?

If you are an owner of a residential property in the Republic of Ireland you may be liable to pay the €100 Household Charge by 31 March 2012. A number of exemptions anwaivers from payment apply.

Exemptions: Any residential property:

  • Subject to commercial rates and wholly used as a dwelling;
  • That is trading stock of a business i.e. not sold/occupied or a source of income since construction

Waivers:

  • Category 3 and 4 unfinished housing estates (list on website).
    Persons claiming entitlement to a waiver are required to register their property.

Where does your money go?

The €100 will go towards paying for essential local services: public parks; libraries; open spaces and leisure amenities; planning and development; fire and emergency services; maintenance and cleaning of streets and street lighting.

How do I pay?

By Post: Forms available at www.householdcharge.ie or by emailing support@householdcharge.ie
Euro Cheque/bank draft made payable to 'Household Charge' and post with form to: Household Charge,
P.O. Box 12168, Dublin 1.

What are the penalties?

It is up to you, the homeowner, to pay the Household Charge by 31 March 2012 (you will not receive an invoice).
Late payment penalties will apply thereafter.
The penalties increase the later payment is made.
