Kilkenny Manager welcomes Bord Pleanala decision on the Central Access Scheme for Kilkenny.

Joe Crockett Kilkenny County Manager welcomed the provisional decision of An Bord Pleanala which he said requires significant modification to the Council's proposals and incorporates heritage concerns as will the concerns of the Kilkenny Local Authorities to facilitate future city centre development and additional pedestrianisation. The Board decided that the concept design of the bridge should be changed significantly, and that phases 2 and 3 of the scheme are premature pending completion of an outer ring complex so as to prevent the city centre developing further as a major traffic route. However Crockett said that provisional decision represents significant strategic choice in favour of city centre rather then edge of town development. He said it will enable the city to build further on the success of the city centre and decades of investment, conservation and regeneration and will enhance the mix of uses which gives Kilkenny its unique character and attractiveness. He said that the Council will continue to work with heritage, business and community interests on the future shape and direction of the City Centre
