Love your Dog, Love Kilkenny - Anti Dog Fouling Campaign Launched
Kilkenny Local Authorities get numerous complaints from the public about dog fouling and have launched a campaign with the backing of the City Mayor, Cllr David Fitzgerald and the Cathaoirleach of the County, Cllr Paul Cuddihy to stamp out dog dirt in Kilkenny.
Mayor David Fitzgerald has highlighted this problem recently with Cllr Betty Manning by taking to the streets to hand out Pooper Scoopers to passing dog walkers. Both are delighted to support the campaign and the Mayor commented that as a member of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful he sees this campaign as a first step in raising awareness of a problem that needs to be redressed.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage every dog owner to meet their legal and more importantly, their social obligation to their local community. The solution to dog dirt is simple; if you are walking your dog in a public place, remember to Scoop the Poop. Free pooper scoopers are available from local libraries, County and City Hall. Pet shops also retail a wide variety of them so there is no excuse.
Cathaoirleach Paul Cuddihy urged all dog owners to be responsible and be true to the campaign slogan - leave only paw prints behind you. "All too many people know how disgusting it is to remove dog dirt from shoes and the nuisance it can cause if dragged into homes via wheels of buggies and prams". He applauded the Council on their initiative and hopes that a concentrated effort to raise the awareness of the issue will stamp out dog dirt for once and for all.
The campaign will be advertised in the local media and is fronted with a tag line "Love your Dog, Respect Kilkenny". Keep an eye out for printed Hi Vis Vests that have been given out to local environmental champions, concerned parents and campaign supporters to highlight the campaign while out walking.
